Recess and Lunchtime:  Are you thoughtful about your child's experience on the Playground?
2nd Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Dixie Library
Please join us in an engaging and mobilizing discussion of such topics as inclusion on the playground, alternative choices of play, and peace mentoring/problem solving by the kids.  Bring your children to a fun evening of programming hosted by Gaby and Marianne at our day care.  This was a huge success last year as the kids interacted with friends of all ages.  Gaby has some truly fun and interesting ideas planned.

Come and learn more about the great work that this group has planned. We are a group of parents that advocates for our children, teachers and each other. We are providing solutions and broadening our sense of community. We are Got Your Back!

Counseling Services at Dixie Elementary

Counseling services at Dixie Elementary are provided through Bay Area Community Resources and its New Perspectives Counseling Program. The counseling team is comprised of both licensed staff as well as interns who are available to help students with social and/or emotional difficulties that may impact their experience at school.

BACR is a non-profit agency founded in 1976 by members of the Marin community. It works with students, families, schools and communities to promote positive development and maintain healthy environments.

If you would like your child to receive school-based counseling services please discuss this with your teacher who can make the referral to the counseling staff. When this has happened, you will receive a call and/or a consent form mailed home to get the process started. Once the counseling staff has received the signed consent form they can get started with your child while also working toward setting up a time to get acquainted with the parents or guardians.

We feel so fortunate to be able to offer this service at our school and hope that you will make use of it as needed.

Sincerely,

Greg Johnson, Principal

Student Use of Facebook and Other Social Media:  A Parent Education Workshop
February 1, 2011 - 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Marin County Office of Education,  1111 Las Gallinas Avenue, San Rafael Download flyer here. En espanol.

The Marin County Office of Education will present a workshop to educate parents and school staff on the impact of social networking, both good and bad, on our children.  Digital media and technology play an enormous role in the lives and learning of our children.  Kids today spend 45 hours per week with media and technology and some media messages and content can be harmful or inappropriate for kids of different ages.

This workshop aims to empower parents, teachers and children to take control of technology to ensure a safe learning environment.   Age- based media reviews and information will be provided so that parents can make smart choices about the media in their student’s lives.

This workshop will be presented by Rebecca Randall, Vice President of Education Programs, Common Sense Media, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing trustworthy information, education and independent voice they need to thrive in a world of media and technology.

Digital Citizenship:
Understanding the New Rules of Engagement Online
with Dr. Larry Magid. Tues, October 26th, @ 7pm at San Domenico School in the Hall of the Arts

Please join us as we welcome Dr. Larry Magid, an internationally respected technology journalist and internet safety advocate, for a balanced and in-depth look at the world of Social Networking and Online Etiquette. (This topic was formerly referred to as Internet Safety; Digital Citizenship is the current term used to encompass all aspects of online safety). During this fascinating and timely evening, Dr. Magid will help parents feel encouraged about this brave new world, and empowered to provide the guidance our students (and we) need in cyberspace.

This topic is timely and crucial, given the daily news reports and our own lived experiences of challenges and tragedies that families face due to mistakes made on the internet. Many of the terms we hear today were unfamiliar to us until recently, and may still seem confusing (texting, sexting, tweeting, cyberbullying). Additionally, the number of opportunities for our students to make mistakes and/or experience very public difficulties grows by the day (on cellphones, Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Buzz, etc). We also know the internet and cyberspace are amazing resources that can be used in positive and healthy ways. With this in mind, we are grateful to be able to welcome a speaker as knowledgeable and experienced as Dr. Magid. Knowing that this broad topic is vital to our students and families, we are hoping as many members of the wider community as possible will join us that evening.
