WHO WE ARE
The goals of the Green Team are simply to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot (compost) all that we can in order to reduce waste, decrease purchasing and disposal costs, create a healthier school environment, reduce our carbon footprint, and serve as a model of sustainability for the school campus and the greater community. We do this through engaging, hands-on and creative education and mentoring for students, teachers, janitorial and administrative staff. Our ultimate goal is for positive green behaviors learned at school to go viral, enabling everyone to make sustainable choices at home, in their neighborhoods and community, effecting change and creating life-long green habits.
The Dixie Green Team is part of a district-wide effort supported by the school board called the Dixie Green Initiative, in which all four schools and administrative offices, campus operations and staff within the Dixie School District work collaboratively, sharing ideas and resources in the areas of green purchasing, water conservation, waste reduction and recycling, and energy use reduction.
The Dixie Junior Green Team, for students in grades 3-5, meets weekly in Room D-16 at lunch. Together with parent leadership, students participate in a variety of activities and educational programs, including environmental science and art projects, campus energy use audits and water conservation initiatives, fun quizzes, special guest speakers, computer lab, Friday Recycle Days and green student leadership initiatives, like mentoring fellow students on proper waste sorting and recycling efforts.
