STAR ASSESSMENT AND ACCELERATED READER All students take part in the Accelerated Reader program. This program is designed to Find books that are at the right level for your child, Encourage your child to read more, Improve your child’s reading ability and Help your child set goals
HOW IT WORKS: Students will take a STAR Test in the coming weeks of school. This is a computer-based test that measures a student’s reading ability through a series of 34 questions. The test is adaptive for each student, and selects different questions based on how well your child answers the previous questions. The test requires concentration, focus, and careful reading. When the STAR Test is completed, a ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) score will be generated for each student. This score will be used to help determine the best level of books for each child to target their reading skills and growth.
WHAT IS A ZPD SCORE: A ZPD Score will be given to your child after finishing the test. The ZPD are the two numbers that a student will use to choose their “just right” reading book. The lowest number is the lowest level of book the student should be choosing, and the highest number is the highest level they should choose. A new STAR test will be administered at least two more times throughout the school year so that students can see improvements in their reading ability, set goals, and choose more challenging books.
Accelerated Reader Quizzes: Students will take an Accelerated Reader (AR) Quiz after they finish reading a book and this is how they work: * Quizzes typically have 10 questions, but may be shorter depending on the length of the book. * At the end of a quiz, students will be given a percentage score to show how well they did on the quiz. * It’s recommended that students take a quiz within 24 hours of reading their book. * Quizzes must be done individually, not with anyone’s help.
WHAT FAMILIES CAN DO AT HOME: Encourage your child to read at home. As with anything, performance will improve with practice. It’s recommended that your child read for at least 15 minutes a day. Create a culture of reading at home. Let your child see you read. Visit the library together. Ask them questions about the books they are reading. Have them read to you, or read to them. Make reading something fun you can do together.
ACCELERATED READER BOOKS AND STUDENT PROGRESS: Everytime a student takes a quiz, a TOPS Report will be generated to show your child how well they did on their quiz and how many points they earned. Your child will be able to log in to AR and view their progress toward their reading goals with their username and password to see how many points they have earned and the number of books read so far. You can log into the AR Bookfinder link to check and see if an AR quiz is available for a certain book title. http://www.arbookfind.com/
STUDENT VIEW: When students log in, they can search for a book to read or a quiz to take, or they can browse suggested books that are within their reading range.
MORE STUDENT VIEWS: By clicking on Progress, students can see how well they’ve done on quizzes, how many total minutes they’ve read, or see all the books they’ve read so far.
BENEFITS OF ACCELERATED READER: Accelerated Reader benefits and supports all children by strengthening and growing their reading skills, regardless of ability. When children read books at their appropriate level, they experience success. Teachers will work together with your child to help set goals and find appropriate reading material based on their level. This in combination with the rigorous reading program in place in the classroom will help each child grow and experience success as a reader.
