Welcome to Dixie!

August 2014

Dear Dixie Elementary School Families,

It is with great pleasure that I write to welcome you and your student(s) to the 2014-2015 school year at Dixie Elementary School. I trust that your summer has been filled with both rest and adventure! The Dixie Staff is gearing up for another great year of learning and innovation. We will again be striving to create experiences where all students are capable of continuous learning and academic progress. As a staff, we will continue to serve the whole-child by providing a safe and nurturing environment that works to prepare our students for life as digital natives in an increasingly complex and connected world.

Please join me in welcoming a number of new teachers at Dixie Elementary. New to Dixie include: Kindergarten-Ms. Michelle Harrison, 2nd Grade-Ms. Nicole Camarda, 3-4-5 Special Day Class-Ms. Kristin McGee, Transitional Kinder-Ms. Anne Shaver, and Transitional Kinder- Ms. Laura Roach. All five of our new teachers come to us with diverse experience and expertise. They are smart, caring and love their profession! In addition, veteran Dixie teacher, Mrs. Debra DiBenedetto has moved to one of our second grade classes. We are so excited (and lucky) to have them join the Dixie Team!

Our first student day is Thursday, August 21st, a shortened day beginning at 8:14 am and ending at 1:25 pm.  Please note that Friday the 22nd is also a 1:25 release day. All K classes begin at 8:14 am and are dismissed at 11:50 am until September 22nd when the K classes move to their extended day and are released at 1:25pm.

Dixie Elementary Back-to-School Nights will be held September 3rd (K-2) and 4th (3-5) from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. There you will have an opportunity to hear about some of our programs and begin forging that all-important relationship with the classroom teacher, as well as learn about the grade level curriculum, specialists, classroom technology, and other educational activities. Below, I have provided important dates to the calendar and I hope that you’ll find the time to digest all of the important information in this mailing. Please remember that it’s critical you return the emergency card with updated e-mail and contact information on the first day of school.

Again, whether you are new to Dixie Elementary School or a returning family, I encourage you to become an active participant in your child’s education and become familiar with the myriad of activities our school offers. There are multiple opportunities throughout the year with many jobs of all sizes and shapes that are essential to the success of our school. If you’re not sure how to become involved, please ask—we’d love to have you! The Dixie Home and School Club and CanDo! are always looking for parent participation! I’ll continue to send out the DixiE-News each Thursday. (If you do not already receive it, sign up with Teri at the Dixie front office or email her at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it asking to be signed up for the newsletter via School Messenger.) We have so much to be proud of at Dixie School and, working together, we will continue to create and foster an inclusive, dynamic and caring school community.

Aloha,

Greg Johnson, Principal
